So Nik’s way of saying that he doesn’t want to do something is to make that thing sad. 

If he doesn’t want to go to school: “Ms. Lisa’s SAD!  I don’t want to see her.  She’s sad.”

Or swim lessons: “Libbeth (Elizabeth!) is SAD, mom!  We no want to go swim lessons!”

Not sure how that started!

  1. btw how did you reply to him?

    me: I usually say something like “Oh, I don’t think she’s sad…how can we make her happy? I know! We should smile at her and say Hi Ms.___ and I’m sure she’d become happy!” It doesn’t always work, and then I just ignore him and he tags along. Age-old strategy for parents!
